A major earthquake of intensity7.8 strikes Turkey, Syria; more than 200 dead, and numerous trapped

The quake, which hit in the early darkness of a downtime morning, was also felt in Cyprus and Lebanon.

A major earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck central Turkey and northwest Syria on Monday, killing about 200 people as structures collapsed across the snowy region, and driving a search for survivors trapped in the debris.

The earthquake, which hit in the early darkness of a downtime morning, was also felt in Cyprus and Lebanon.

" I've never felt anything like it in the 40 years I have lived," said Erdem, a resident of the Turkish city of Gaziantep, near the quake's epicenter, Unknown

" We were shaken at least three times veritably explosively, like a baby in a crib."

Turkey's disaster agency said 76 people had been killed, and 440 hurt, as authorities climbed deliverance brigades and forced aircraft to the affected area, while declaring a" position 4 alarm" that calls for transnational backing.
